How to configure Outlook Express?




What is outlook express?

 

Outlook express is an email client which allows users to send and receive emails without having to log on to a web portal. It was compatible with Microsoft 98 to Windows XP series 3.

 

How to add an email account?

 

Please follow these steps to set up your email account on Outlook Express:

1. Open Outlook Express.
2. Click on “Tools” menu at the top of the screen and then select “Accounts”.
3. Click on the “Add” icon.
4. Click on “Mail” icon.
5. A new window will appear asking you to type in your display name. Please note: The display name will be the name that appears on all of the emails that you send
6. Click on Next
7. Enter the full email address such as admin@example.com into the Email Address Field and then click on Next
8. A new window will appear asking you to do the following
• Choose account type – please select the email account that you wish to use IMAP or POP3. Please choose IMAP if you intend to have this email account setup on multiple devices.
• Please input the incoming and outgoing mail server information – for both incoming and outgoing mail server the settings should be mail.domainname e.g for example.com it would be mail.example.com
9. Click on Next
10. A new window will appear asking you to do the following
• Enter account name — please enter in your full email address
• Enter account password – please enter your email address password

11. Click on Next and then you should get a windows that will say that you have successfully set up the email account. It will then take you back to the main email page.

Once we have set up the account we need to change two default settings set on Outlook express to get the email account up and running.

12. Please select the email account under the mail tab and then select “Properties” which is locate on the right hand side.
13. A new window will appear with the following tabs
• General
• Server
• Connections
• Security
• Advance
• IMAP (this tab will only appear on IMAP email accounts)

Please select on the Server tab
14. On the server tab please select the option “My server requires authentication” And the click on the Settings icon.
15. Please tick the option “use same settings as my incoming mail server’ and click Ok
16. Please select the Advance Tab then.
17. On the “Advanced” tab please make sure that the port number for outgoing mail (SMTP) is 25 or 587 and the incoming port is 110 for Pop3 or 143 for IMAP.
18. Use the following type of encrypted connection TLS with 587 and accept the certificate – (it’s all about secure emails delivery)
19. Please make sure that the option “this server requires a secure connection (SSL)” is not ticked for both the incoming and outgoing mail servers.
20. Click on the OK icon to save the settings.
21. If you have created an IMAP account it will ask you if you want to “download folders from the mail server you added”. Please click yes.
22. Please click on the Close icon to close down the window and it will take you the Outlook Express main page.
Congratulations! You have finished setting up your email account on Outlook express.
